TEAM TASER Spotlight: Jennifer Chan

When she’s not heading up TASER Self-Defense marketing efforts, Jennifer can be found exploring the PNW trails near her Seattle area home or experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen. We talked to Jen and learned more about what keeps her going both at home and work, and her approach to self-defense and safety.

What is your role on the TASER Self-Defense Team?
I’m the Digital Marketing Manager on the TASER Self-Defense team.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I really enjoy getting to come in to work every day and work on all sorts of different projects – no day is ever the same. Being able to engage with customers and educate them about less-lethal self defense is so impactful. It gives me a strong sense of mission and ownership, which is important to me.

How did you end up working for TASER Self-Defense?

I’ve been working in marketing for over 10 years at various publishing and tech companies. When I was looking at taking the next step in my career, I wanted to find a role where I could use my talents for good – and TASER Self-Defense couldn’t have been a better fit.

What was your knowledge of self-defense and safety before working at TASER Self-Defense?

Having lived and worked in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle early in my career, the importance of personal safety and education around self-defense was a topic I could really identify with. I’ve taken self-defense courses here and there since college, and my girlfriends and I knew what areas of the city to avoid, where to sit on the bus during off-hour commutes (the front), and to always be aware of our surroundings, but there wasn’t much knowledge around carrying stun guns and TASER devices. The opportunity to educate and engage folks on TASER products really resonates with me on a personal level.

Do you carry a TASER device? Which one and why?

I have both the StrikeLight and Pulse+ devices. The StrikeLight is great for camping trips, hikes, and late night dog walks, while I keep the Pulse+ around for household safety. My husband and I don’t own a firearm, and while we've never had to use our Pulse+ in an emergency situation, having it in our home gives us that extra layer of security if anything were to happen.

If you could go anywhere and do anything... what would you do?

I’d eat my way through a pastry tour of France. (Yes, I have a sweet tooth!)

What is your best personal safety tip (aside from carrying a TASER device):

Trust your instincts. Listen to that little voice if something doesn’t feel right. Have a ‘safety’ buddy – whether it’s a sibling, friend, or family member, let someone close to you know where you’ll be, and notify them when you get home safely, even if it’s through a text message.

TASER devices allow you to protect what matters. What matters to you? What do you value and want to protect the most and why?

My husband, family, and close friends make life wonderful, and everything going on in the world right now with COVID-19 emphasizes the importance of having our health and safety. I worry about family and friends working on the front lines, and elderly family members who are vulnerable health-wise. It feels so contrary to protect the people we care for in our lives by social distancing, and I know that when we can all be together again I’ll value our time together that much more.
